We were appalled to learn of the incident at Dania Elementary School in which another child with special needs was abused by a teacher inside a Broward County classroom. We look forward to the expedient conclusion of a full inquiry by Broward County Public Schools into this incident and note that the teacher involved has been reassigned and will have no direct contact with students while the investigation takes place.
We are alarmed at the increasing frequency of reports of abuses of students with disabilities by those charged with their welfare and safety within the school district. We request that urgent priority be given by BCPS leadership to the resolution passed by the Broward ESE Advisory Council in May 2019, subsequently presented to school board members, calling for the installation of video cameras in all self-contained classrooms in grades pre-K through 12th.
In light of recent events, the safety of ALL students in Broward County is of the utmost importance. We will continue to advocate for the safety and wellbeing of our students with autism, including our non-verbal population who are unable to speak up for themselves. We further note with regret that the student who was the victim in the Dania Elementary School incident had previously and recently been victimized by another teacher at his former school. Clearly this is unacceptable.
ACE will continue to seek full accountability for all teachers and staff entrusted with the care of our children in Broward County schools.
